Laboratory and Transfusion Medicine

Institute for laboratory and transfusion medicine

The institute has the task to analyse the various materials of human origin in order to recognise, assess the course and supervise the treatment of diseases. The main sample materials are blood, urine, faeces, cerebral liquor and other body fluids. More than 500.000 samples are turned in every year, and more than 500 different methods of analysis are applied.

By co-operating with a laboratory practise, ambulant and stationary diagnostics can be effectively combined.

The institute is subdivided into the following areas:

Haematology: The number of red and white blood cells and platelets is determined, and their appearance and spread are evaluated under the microscope. Another task is the examination of blood plasma for its coagulability.

Clinical Chemistry: Determination of blood glucose level, state of the urine, electrolytes, purine and renin levels, heart enzymes, lipoprotein level, and many other things.

Determination of hormone levels in order to recognise metabolic and development disorders, as well as causes for infertility.

Tumour markers for recognising tumours and for supervision after surgical removal of a tumour. Monitoring of medicinal therapy with substances whose dosage margin is extremely small by means of blood plasma level determination.

Microbiology: Search for bacteria and fungi in material taken from all body fluids as well as swabs from wound areas. Counselling the attending physicians on measures necessary to prevent or fight infectious diseases.

Virology / Serology and Immunology: Tests to recognise virally or bacterially caused infectious diseases. Immunological examinations serve to recognise and monitor acquired or innate disorders within the immune system.

Immunohaematology: Blood group typing and detection of blood group antibodies. Serological tolerance tests before blood transfusions, ensuring supply of banked blood for transfusion. Immunohaematological examinations are part of the prenatal examinations.

Blood Donation Centre: Blood from about 2.500 donors is taken every year. We split the blood up into red blood cells, blood plasma and platelets, fill the components into suitable bags, carefully examine them to ensure that they can be safely used, and store them until they are needed.

Molecular Biology: By means of modern, highly sensitive methods (so-called PCR), the most minute sections of genetic material - of pathogenic micro-organisms, but also of humans - can be identified. Thus, infections and innate diseases can be diagnosed quickly and safely.
