Pharmacy
The pharmacy is in charge of providing pharmaceutical attendance to the diaconal hospital. The aim of its work is to contribute to the patients' quick and safe recovery while paying attention to certain economic principles.
The pharmacy mainly fulfils the following tasks:
Supplying the diaconal hospital with medical drugs.
This includes obtaining and stocking the medicine, dispensing it to the wards, taking back unused medicine, and disposing of it in an ecologically harmless manner. Since the pharmacy maintains an emergency depot, there is always someone on call outside the opening hours.
Preparing and testing medicine:
The pharmacy prepares cytostatics for the whole hospital (approx. 4.500 preparations per year). It produces about 100 different preparations itself. Medicine and base components are analysed and infusion mixtures tested for tolerance.
Pharmaceutical Economy
In the drug commission, the pharmacy co-operates with the doctors of the hospital to compile a list of the preparations used at our hospital ('positive list'), in order to achieve an efficient and cost-effective therapy (almost all drugs are bought directly from the industry). The wards are regularly inspected for stock and storage of the drugs.
Clinical Pharmacy
The pharmacy informs and advises doctors and nurses on questions of medical therapy, partly in its regular publication, the 'Apothekerbote'. Interactions and side-effects of drugs, e.g., can also be clarified by means of the available data bank research and literature service.
Courses
The pharmacy contributes to the training and further vocational education at the diaconal hospital. It is a state-approved place of further education in the field of clinical pharmacy.
